Thoughts about Dream High

I’ve been watching Dream High, and while it’s sorta predictable and not that good of a drama, I can’t seem to stop watching it o.o LOL. Anyway, Dream High stars a tooon of kpop idols, including Taecyeon, Wooyoung (2PM), IU, Suzy (miss A), Eunjung (T-ara), and Joo. Then you have actor Kim Soo Hyun who’s been acting for a while now (I last saw him in Will it Snow for Christmas? as the younger version of Go Soo’s role and Giant). And, wow we have JYP making an acting debut (and is doing pretty good too!) and Bae Yong Joon (big hallyu star…anybody watched Winter Sonata? ya, that was like the very very beginning of the hallyu drama wave IMO).

The storyline’s pretty simple; the life and challenges of a group of students at the Kirin Art School, where the students prepare themselves in hopes to debut one day as an artist. Of course, every one of them have their own story.

Hye Mi (Suzy)’s a now bankrupt rather snobby girl with opera-singing abilities. She’s forced to go to Kirin Art School to pay off her father’s debts and ensure the safety of her younger sister (whom I actually thought was a little boy in the beginning LOL). The loan shark knows about her talents and is the one who pushed her to audition for the school. He expects her to debut so that she becomes famous and can pay off the debts. Random much? That’s a lot to gamble on. Funniest thing is that the loan shark used to be a manager XD Jin Gook (Taecyeon) is a talented dancer but a hardheaded case. We learn that he met Suzy when they were younger. We all know, in Korean dramas, childhood friends…end up falling in love. So I expect at some point for Hye Mi to have some sudden realization. Jin Gook we already know is doing a lot to protect Hye Mi. Anyway, at this point we’re not exactly sure about his background story; we just know his father is rich and doesn’t seem to like his son much. The whereabouts of his mom are unknown; clearly the woman his father is married to now is not his mother. Sam Dong (Kim Soo Hyun) is a country bumpkin with quite the musical talent (you can watch for yourself to find out what) and singing skills. He falls in love with Hye Mi at first sight and leaves his small town to attend the school. His dad was a singer and he only has his mom left, who he cares very much about. Baek Hee (Eunjung) was Hye Mi’s friend (though really more a follower), but after a series of incidents occur, Baek Hee ends her friendship with Hye Mi and becomes the antagonist of the show. To be honest, Baek Hee’s role is extremely predictable. You’re supposed to feel bad for her, but then feel bad for Hye Mi too for what Baek Hee does. Pil Suk (IU) is a talented singer with guitar skills, but she’s overweight. She wear a giant sushi costume when she auditions because she’s embarassed of her appearance. The director (Bae Yong Joon) lets her through despite the disagreements of the other teachers because he believes in those who have talent, and not appearance. Pil Suk is in love with Jason (Wooyoung), a foreign exchange student. He is very popular due to his exceptional dancing and singing skills.

Like I said, the drama is pretty predictable. There’s totally going to be a love triangle between Hye Mi, Jin Gook, and Sam Dong. Pil Suk we know will end up having a big transformation to become pretty and skinny, and obviously will end up with Jason. Hye Mi’s snobby and rather negative character will change and she’ll become nice. Baek Hee will hate Hye Mi more and more throughout the drama, competing with her all the time and causing troubles. But of course, Hye Mi will win at the end. Everyone will discover their true potential, bla, bla, bla. Suzy’s acting needs some work. She has the same bored facial expression in almost every scene. I understand she’s supposed to be negative, but that doesn’t mean she has to have that same expression all the time. Taecyeon I find has potential. He was pretty good in Cinderella’s Sister, and he’s keeping it up here. IU’s pretty good too. Wooyoung I haven’t seen enough acting to make comments, since he hasn’t had that much dialogue or many scenes. Kim Soo Hyun is an actor, so his acting is pretty decent. He’s not an amazing actor, but he’s not that old so he has years to come to build on it in other dramas and movies. Eunjung has had some experience as a lead in Coffee House (which I didn’t watch all of) so her acting’s not bad either. She’s much stronger than Suzy when it comes to acting, but there are some points where it’s a little shakier. However, I think she portrays her role quite well.

Besides the drama itself, its OST is racking up to be pretty good. I can’t say it’s really amazing like the Secret Garden OST (HELLO! 4Men, Mi, Kim Bum Soo, Baek Ji Young, Yoon Sang Hyun etc. and then Hyun Bin?! A freaking ear candy fest!!!) but the tracks are pretty good! My facourite right now has to beWonder Girl’s Sunye’s ‘Maybe’, followed by ‘Winter Child’ from miss A’s Suzy. Then we have the title theme track ‘Dream High’, an upbeat song sung by Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Suzy and Kim Soo Hyun. We all know nowadays that all the OSTs are going to be released in parts as singles, so that they can rake as much money in as possible, before a full OST CD or two is going to be released at the end *cough*SecretGardenhowmanyfreakingsinglesdidyouhave???*cough* to rake in the last of their profits. I’ll be looking forward to the rest of the soundtracks though, since I’m enjoying the songs quite a fair bit.
